Arts and Humanities Month

We began celebrating October as AAHM since 2022 and enjoyed exploring the scope of ‘Humanities’ through the medium of Arts.

Our Theme for 2023 Eco-Culture-Arts projects is Water which will continue during AAHM. Share your Cultural Stories/ songs/ poems/ while we create Art.

Art entries generated during this month will be displayed in America Recycles Day Month and will serve as a prep for Spring 2024 events.

Stay tuned here for updates as they come.

Submit Upcycle Art entry on this form

Action outline:

  • October- Groups start collecting clean recyclable items on one day or on weekly basis.

  • Though our emphasis this year will be on Paper, we can include all types of clean recyclables. (Ex: flyers/ empty boxes/ snack cans, cardboards, you can even include clean yard waste)

  • Use the items, to create an Up-cycled Art, or a Science/ Maths/ Social studies/ Languages project that enhances the item.

  • The completed projects will be entered through an online form to be released soon.

  • Selected creative projects will be chosen for a possible exhibit in following month.

  • We are working on possible displays of artworks generated, in November as part of ‘America Recycles day’ celebrations.

  • More details to be added here.

Let’s come together to celebrate the rich Cultural diversity of our Nation through the medium of Arts.

Join our celebrations!

Action Plan:

Upcyle a Map- Art competition

PACA holds a collection of maps from the Illinois State Geological Survey. Each map provides topographical details of a particular area of Illinois. These maps were all digitized a few years ago, and the paper copies were destined to be discarded. Our salvage team preserved them for future use and now you have the chance to upcycle them.

We will provide each contestant one topographical map and the rest is up to you. Your challenge is to create a work of art utilizing just the map, or you may combine it with any other up-cycled materials as you see fit. Stop by the PACA Warehouse to select your map or to ask any questions. You might just find the inspiration you need during your visit! Three projects will receive awards, including one by a popular vote held at our Open House November 16th.
This activity is free and sponsored by PACA, the Preservation and Conservation Association of Champaign County.

Architreasures, an Architecture Scavenger Hunt
Downtown Champaign, Downtown Urbana, Mahomet and Campus
Ongoing Event starting October 15th. Last day for submitting answers is November 15th.

Use the clues we provide in order to find historic landmarks in Champaign County. Join in our scavenger hunt for amazing architectural treasures, i.e., “Architreasures.” This is a family friendly event that you can do at your own pace anytime you happen to be out. You will be provided a closeup detail of a building or structure in a specific region — such as Downtown Champaign — along with a couple facts about it to help you along. You will build a stronger connection with our local history through searching for these Architreasures. The featured buildings have continued to be used or repurposed over decades and their stories, as well as the stories of their architects and tenants, weave a rich history that many local residents are unaware of. One lucky participant will be recognized at our Open House on November 16th and will win a prize. If you get stuck, stop in our warehouse for a hint.
This activity is free and sponsored by PACA, the Preservation and Conservation Association of Champaign County.

Open House at the PACA Architectural Salvage Warehouse
PACA Warehouse, 44 East Washington Street, Champaign, IL 61820
November 16th at 5pm

You are invited to visit the Salvage Warehouse for our open house. We will be exhibiting all the upcycled art from our map competition including providing everyone with an opportunity to vote for their favorite. We will share the answers to our scavenger hunt at that time as well. During the event, our most common upcycled items will be displayed, and you will have a chance to learn more about preservation in our community. Our goal is to salvage pieces of high quality material or craftsmanship, and save them from being thrown away. We hope to give them a chance at a second life. Occasionally the pieces will find their way into the structure of another home being preserved, and at other times the pieces became collectables or works of art. Any children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult to this event.

A donation of $5 per family is suggested to attend but not required. All donations will support our efforts to provide preservation based educational opportunities and events. Please direct questions to pacaexdir@gmail.com.
